There is a spring loaded o ring clasp conjoining the cross to the chain. This is a St. Martin Iona cross. Iona is a tiny island off the west coast of Scotland. A bit of history..the cross was dedicated to John the Evangelist, a saint much admired by the earth church. It once stood outside Iona Abbey marking a special place for prayer and pilgrimage.
